April 2006

From our Head Coach – Dale Leonhart

Meets:

Great meet in Durango!  The Pentathlon was a success for our team!  We had great swims and lots of BIG time drops!!!!  We are pleased with the attitude and behavior in practices; and it is obvious that you are doing a good job of focusing on skills and techniques.  Otherwise, we would not have such good meet performances.  The complete meet results are posted on our website, www.grandjunctiondolphins.com.  The Dolphins swam 100 events and achieved 52% personal best times!!  Pentathlon events are not scored as in a traditional meet.  Instead of the top times in each event receiving a score, the times for all events for each swimmer are combined.  Finishing first for the 8&U Girls was Marina Silva, 2nd for 8&U boys Stavo Peters, 2nd for 11-12 boys Nick Stubler and 3rd for 13-14 girls Jessica Fischer!!  Other Dolphins placing in the top 10 in their age groups were Gena Baber,  Addy Bergen, and Jessica Deters.  Way to go Dolphins!!

Free High School Sports Physicals:

At GJHS May 21/22 at 7 p.m.  Call 254-6900 for details, ask for Cathy Pollert.

Summer Registration:

Registration for the summer 2006 session will be May 24 or May 25 from 5:30 to 6:30 at Mesa State College.  We will reserve a classroom.  The summer session runs from June 5 through the end of July.  We take a break in August, then get back in the pool mid-September.

Dual in the Pool with Montrose!  (12&Under):

We will use the high school event format and dual with Montrose Marlins on Saturday, 3 June.  This meet will kick off the summer season for the 12&Under swimmers.  Plan to attend!  Details to follow.

Aspen Swim Camp

May 27/28:  Swim camp let by CSU Swim Coach Mattos.  This is a two ½ session on stroke development.  There is a flyer at the pool on the bulletin board, and has been emailed out.  Space is limited, so sign up right away!

Distance Camp in Flagstaff, Arizona (13&Over):

We will leave from GJ on the morning of Wednesday, 31 May and return in the afternoon of Tuesday, 6 June.  Cost will be $275-$300/camper; this will cover everything except personal incidentals, souvenirs, and a movie nite.  We will travel by 12 passenger vans.  Coaches will be Silas and Dale and one other TBA.  Expect to work on skills, techniques, and endurance (at least 1500/hour/LCM for 1.75 hours and twice daily).  The pool is 50M   LC, indoors.  We will have access to weights, climbing wall, and additional training facilities.  Meals will be at the motel, on the economy, and at the UNA’s training tables/mess hall.  Lodging will be at Amerisuites, (or comparable), with quad occupancy.

You must be in condition; training at 7500’ twice a day in a 50M pool is challenging!  Plan to spend the month of May building your endurance base for this camp.

I need one female chaperone!  Duties include meal prep (especially lunch and snacks), some supervision, chauffeuring, etc.  Please talk with Dale.

Summer Practice Schedule:

We will begin training according to our summer schedule on Monday, 5 June at Lincoln Park pool and Mesa State pool.  Remember that the summer season is short – only 2 months!  Please participate in as many meets as possible, especially Western Slope Championships.  It is a total team effort and we’d like to win this meet for the Western Slope!  It is a qual meet, qual times will be posted on our website at www.grandjunctiondolphins.com.

From GJD Board President

Brett Walton

Spring is here and the summer long course season begins in June. Long course season is short, June and July. It's a busy time, but a good time too! Please try to make it to as many meets as possible, and mark your calendars for the Western Slope Championship meet. This is the most important team meet of the season and we need as many swimmers as possible to attend. It's a qual meet and you can find the qual times on the Dolphin website at www.grandjunctiondolphins.com. Our biggest fundraiser of the year (often netting $15,000+) is the GJ Dolphin Invitational from June 22-25. We will have over 600 swimmers attend this meet from across Colorado and other states. We need everyone's participation in preparing for and running this meet - everything from setup to tear down: hospitality, administration, announcers, timers, and awards. Please plan on volunteering! There will be sign up sheets at the pool and coordinators will be calling for help. There will also be a team travel meet to Durango in June - check the schedule!

Let's work and play together and make it a great summer!
