From Head Coach Dale Leonhart:

May is upon us!

Graduations, congratulations, pentathlon, final exams, school’s out for the summer, distance camp, summer long course season = busy, busy, busy.

FREE PHYSICALS:  If you intend to participate in a high school sport next year, you can get a free school physical by signing up with District #51 and attending the screening.  Down load the form from the District web-site (www.mesa.k12.co.us).  The dates are: boys, 22 May, 6PM, @ GJHS and girls, 23 May, 6PM, GJHS.  Contact GJHS @ 254-6900 ext #3 if you have questions.

Meets:

Durango Pentathlon:  we have only 13 swimmers participating.  I think this is sad!  Last year, we took 23.  We have many, many younger swimmers who would benefit from this type of meet.  Hopefully, this was just one of those tough conflict situations where most team members had other commitments that were more important.

Cortez:  8-10 June: this will be our first meet of the summer season.  It is both short and long course.  Meet info will be sent to all as soon as we receive it.  This trip is a fun one: we can stay in a motel, camp at the park or KOA, etc.  Plan to go to this meet.

Sopris/Carbondale: 15-17 June:  this meet is great for our younger swimmers (12Under) and less experienced older swimmers (13UP).

Grand Junction Invite: 22-24 June: we host this meet.  Short Course Yards Sprint Pentathlon on Friday, Long Course Meters Timed Finals Age Group Meet on Sat and Sun. Plan to support our team.

Durango: 29 June -1 July: Timed Finals, Short Course Meters, Indoor.  Good Meet for most all swimmers.

Montrose: 13-15 July: this meet is indoor, short course meters, timed finals.  Good format, close to home, last chance to qualify for West Slope Champs.

West Slope Champs: 20-22 July in Rangely.  Our team championship meet.  All qualified should attend.  We want to win this meet!!!

State Long Course Championships: 26-29 July.  We host this meet: it is a great money maker for our team.  All qualified swimmers and lots of parent volunteers!!!

Far Westerns: 1-5 August in Concord-Pleasant Hills, California.  Tough Age Group PreLim and Finals meet for 13 up swimmers who make the cuts.  13Up swimmers must have at least three events to swim. (12 year olds with multiple events may be taken to this meet.  See coach and find out if you think you are one of these swimmers.)  All intending to swim this meet must attend 85% of the workouts beginning with summer schedule on 4 June.

Western Zone Colorado  All-Star Meet: Farmington, New Mexico: 8-12 August.  Swimmers selected based on top three finishes in Colorado meets up to and including meets held the weekend of Montrose meet.  Usually, team is composed of up to 80 swimmers: age groups are 10Un, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18.  See coach if you are interested.

Distance Camp:  dates are 30 May-5 June if camp is in Flagstaff, AZ or 1-7 June if camp is in Cortez, Colorado.  We will let you know as soon as we get details worked out.  Cost is $300/swimmer.  This includes transportation to/from location of camp, meals, lodging, fees,  but, not personal incidentals, nor movies, etc.   Swimmers must be 13 or older, in shape to participate in two 2 hours long course workouts each day for a week.  See Dale if you are interested.

Practice:  please be prompt.  It is disruptive to the flow of a workout when swimmers arrive late.

GIRLS (AND BOYS WITH LONG HAIR): you must wear a cap to practice.  No more hair ties, scrunchies, etc.  If you have long hair, control it in a swim cap.  No cap = no practice.

Schedule for summer practices:  Begins on Monday, 4 June 2007.

Coaching Staff:

This summer, Dale, Ed, Marie De Puey, and Will Leonhart will be coaching our team’s swimmers.  We anticipate a great long course campaign and look forward to working with our swimmers during this summer season.  Our team goal is to win the West Slope Championship Meet and place in the Top Ten at the State Meet.

Team Pot Luck Breakfast:

We plan to schedule a team breakfast early in the summer after practice at Lincoln Park.  This breakfast is for parents and swimmers.  We will ask for volunteers to work at our two big meets, talk about summer goals, answer questions, and eat some good food together!!!

1500 Team Relay Activity:

Wednesday, 4 July @ Lincoln Park during our regular practice time, we will hold a team relay:  the distance is 1500M, each team has 10 swimmers: 2 each 8Un, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, Seniors.  Participants swim from 1 to 5 lengths depending on age and ability.  Senior swimmers captain these teams.  More info to come.

This is a great team building activity!!
